Computerised Vehicle Routing and Scheduling
TDI uses DPS Logix. This is one of the UK's leading computerised vehicle routing and scheduling packages. It is widely used and has a good reputation in the Logistics Sector.
It is capable of scheduling at street level detail and can handle large and small projects equally well. There is no limit to the number of customer orders it can handle.
We have used the software for many years for a wide variety of projects where clients were seeking the most efficient and cost effective logistics solution for their business.
Typical uses for the software by our consultant are:
ü Establishing the minimum number and mix of vehicles required from
current operating bases
ü Determining the optimum number, size and location of depots required
to achieve the required level of customer service
ü Integrating fleets from several depots to provide the best solution
ü Establishing the optimum shift patterns for a given logistics scenario
Once the data has been successfully imported and validated alternative scenarios can be readily modelled. Scheduling speed is very fast. Different scenarios can be modelled using fleets of varying sizes and combinations of specific vehicle types.
The system can be used strategically or operationally.
An example of a strategic exercise would be where a client is developing a new national distribution strategy and needs to determine the resources required and where they should be based. This could be a manufacturer launching a new product or absorbing another operation following internal restructuring or acquisition of another business entity.
An example of an operational study would be where the client's operation entails fixed routes which are repeated daily or weekly (e.g. deliveries of foodstuffs to small retail outlets, bakery deliveries etc) the routes generated by the system can be used by the client for service provision.
After the modelling has been completed detailed and summary reports can be produced in Excel for presentation of results to the client.
The results are compared with the client's present arrangements to determine the most cost effective solution.
Savings of 5 - 10% are commonly achieved and sometimes they are significantly higher.
